Vaccine Process Research and Development Scientist (Associate Scientist, Scientist, Senior Scientist)

Applications are sought from entry-level to senior scientific opportunities in our Vaccine Process Research and Development (VPR&D) division. These positions are applied broadly to the VPR&D organization and the candidate could be brought into one of three areas:


Vaccine Process Development: Under the direction of the group leader, the individual will be responsible for process development of vaccine candidates. The successful candidate will perform lab-scale process development/scale-up studies, develop robust, efficient, scalable processes for vaccine production, and transfer processes to clinical or commercial manufacturing facilities for vaccine candidates. Duties may include, but are not limited to: lab scale cell culture, fermentation, centrifugation, filtration, chromatography, bioconjugation, in-process assays, process scale-up and engineering, GMP document preparation and modifications, maintaining/coordinating raw material, and equipment inventories, technology transfer to manufacturing, and functioning as a key member of a process development team.


Vaccine High-throughput Development & Innovation: The individual will serve as an individual scientific contributor to deliver high throughput process development (HTPD) solutions to process teams and to conduct microscale screening experiments as required to drive vaccine development. The individual could contribute to a range of specific activities including, but not limited to: (1) developing HTPD workflows and associated high-throughput analytics; (2) supporting screening experiments for cell/virus culture, reaction chemistry, and chromatography development; (3) identifying opportunities to utilize HTPD to enhance process understanding; (4) implementing and maintaining robotic systems with liquid-handling hardware and (5) programming of robotic systems, user interfaces, and automated data analysis operations.


Bioprocess Clinical Manufacturing and Technology (BCMT): The individual will serve on teams supporting GMP manufacture of clinical material. Assignments include, but are not limited to: (1) serving on the Process Team to execute GMP manufacture; (2) serving on the Infrastructure Team to support instrument and facility qualification; (3) serving on the Training and Critical Documents Team to maintain SOPs and training curricula for the organization; (4) serving on the Automation Team to provide ongoing automation system and IT support to the GMP facility.


In all cases, the incumbent is expected to function in a multi-disciplinary environment and to contribute subject matter expertise to various functional teams engaged in development and clinical manufacture of the vaccine candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate the ability to communicate results of his/her work in both verbal and written formats. In addition to the core responsibilities outlined above, the candidate will be expected to keep careful notes, comply with all required training, and maintain a focused attention on laboratory/facility safety for themselves and the team.


This position requires the employee to be willing to work with infectious agents and/or pathogens. Travel may be required to support technology transfer. This position will require occasional off hour and weekend work.


Work Experience

Education Minimum Requirement:

Associate Scientist

  • Must have a BS in ChemE, BME, BioE, Biology or related field

Scientist

  • Must have a MS in ChemE, BME, BioE, Biology or related field

Senior Scientist

  • Must have a PhD in ChemE, BME, BioE, Biology or related field

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude.
  • Must have ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies.
  • Excellent organization, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Direct experience with bioprocess development (cell culture, bioreactors, separations/purification).
