Job Description

Our Research & Development Division in South San Francisco is seeking a highly capable Senior Scientist with a strong background in cell pharmacology and bioanalytical science to join the Quantitative Biosciences department. The individual will design, execute, and interpret complex in vitro/ex vivo studies to support drug discovery across multiple disease areas. Successful candidates should demonstrate broad knowledge and technical expertise in pharmacology and bioanalytical method development/execution (HPLC, LC/MS, GC/MS, etc.), a strong track record of applying lipidomics/metabolomics approaches to pathway analysis and biomarker discovery, and the ability to integrate bioanalytical results with other data streams to drive mechanistic insight of target biology and therapeutic intervention. He or she should have a strong work ethic, excellent communication skills, and can work effectively in a collaborative cross-functional team environment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide cell pharmacology and bioanalytical support for multiple therapeutic areas, including cardiometabolic, immunology, and oncology.

  • Develop mechanistic and potency assays to characterize diverse targets/models/pathways and molecules, using advanced bioanalytical and pharmacological methods

  • Design and execute lipidomics/metabolomics studies to assess metabolic changes under disease conditions and/or through therapeutic intervention, and to help elucidate mechanistic links between target engagement and disease phenotype

  • Targeted/untargeted LC/MS assay development and optimization (for both cellular and tissue samples) on different platforms, MS data processing and analysis using various software, as wells as routine instrument maintenance and end-to-end technical troubleshooting

  • Evaluate, develop, and implement new bioanalytical technologies and methods to improve workflow and enhance capabilities

  • Leverage extensive lab automation to enhance assay quality and operational efficiency

  • Drive scientific and technical innovations to enhance functional capability and productivity

  • Represent Quantitative Biosciences department in multi-disciplinary project teams

  • Collaborate extensively across our Research & Development Division network and with external partners to drive project progression toward milestones

Qualifications

Education Requirement:

  • Ph.D. in Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related scientific discipline, with prior bioanalytical experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical setting

Experience Required

  • Relevant knowledge and expertise in mechanistic pharmacology and cell model/assay development to support drug discovery

  • Comprehensive skills in LC/MS and other bioanalytical methods, with a proven record of in-depth MS characterization and quantitation of small molecules and lipids

  • Extensive method development experience in lipidomics/metabolomics and targeted LC/MS assays for a broad range of metabolites

  • Hands-on experience with various sample preparation techniques, MS instrumentations (Waters, Thermo, etc.), and data analysis software

  • In-depth understanding of lipid biochemistry and lipidomics applications in cardiometabolic and immuno-oncology drug discovery is highly desirable

  • Familiarity with isotopic labeling and metabolic tracer/flux study methods is preferred

  • Prior experience with automated liquid handling instruments (Multidrop, Bravo, Echo, etc.) for laboratory operation is a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment to advance drug discovery, with excellent organization and communication skills
